Fit an automatic nozzle wherever fuel goes into a vehicle or plant tank, because it shuts off by itself when the tank is full and an unattended overfill is the expensive failure. Fit a manual nozzle where you are filling something the automatic mechanism cannot sense properly — open containers, drums, small tanks and measured decanting — and where the operator is holding it anyway. Then match the spout to the receiving tank and the flow rate to the pump, because most nozzle complaints are actually a mismatch.
The nozzle is the cheapest component in a dispensing setup and the one the operator actually touches, which is why it gets blamed for problems that belong elsewhere and replaced when something upstream is at fault.

The Mechanism
How an automatic nozzle knows to stop
This is worth understanding, because nearly every automatic nozzle complaint makes sense once you do.
An automatic nozzle has a small sensing port near the tip of the spout, connected by a tube back to a diaphragm in the nozzle body. While fuel is flowing, the flow past that port creates a small vacuum, and the nozzle is designed so that this vacuum is continuously relieved by air drawn in through the port.
When rising fuel in the receiving tank covers the sensing port, air can no longer get in. The vacuum builds instead of being relieved, the diaphragm moves, and it trips a latch that releases the main valve. The nozzle shuts off — mechanically, with no electronics involved.
Consequence 1
It senses the spout, not the tank
It shuts off when fuel reaches the port, wherever that happens to be. Insert the spout only a little way and it shuts off late; push it deep into a filler neck and it may shut off early.

Anything blocking the port fools it
Dirt, water, a bent spout or fuel splashing back up the filler neck all read as "tank full" to the mechanism, because they stop air reaching the port.

If displaced air cannot escape as fuel goes in, pressure builds and fuel backs up the filler neck onto the port. This is the single most common cause of a nozzle that keeps clicking off.

The honest summary: an automatic nozzle is the default for filling tanks, and a manual nozzle is the right tool for filling containers. Most sites need one of each rather than a choice between them. Manual nozzles are also cheaper, simpler, have fewer parts to fail and tolerate rough handling better — a real argument on a farm or a remote site where a replacement is a week away.
Sizing
Matching the spout and the flow rate
Spout diameter is not a detail
- Diesel spouts are larger than petrol spouts. That difference is deliberate: a larger diesel spout will not fit into an unleaded filler neck, which is the physical safeguard against putting diesel into a petrol vehicle.
- High-flow diesel nozzles use a larger spout again, matched to the higher flow rate. A high-flow nozzle on a small filler neck will not seat properly and will click off constantly.
- AdBlue is a separate system entirely. AdBlue nozzles are dedicated, and vehicle AdBlue fillers use a different, smaller arrangement specifically so fuel nozzles cannot be inserted. The AdBlue nozzles and accessories range exists for this reason.
Check the receiving tank before you buy the nozzle. The filler necks you actually fill decide the spout, not the thread on your hose.
A nozzle also has a flow rating, and it should be at or above the pump's output. Undersize it and the nozzle becomes the restriction: flow drops, the pump works against back pressure, the bypass valve opens and circulates fuel internally, and the setup gets warm and slow. Operators read that as a weak pump. Oversize it and little goes wrong, although a very high-flow nozzle on a slow pump can be sluggish to trip its shut-off, because the mechanism relies on flow past the port. Swivels
The part that saves the hose
A swivel between the hose and the nozzle lets the nozzle rotate without twisting the hose. It sounds like a convenience item. It is actually a hose-life item: a delivery hose that is twisted every time the nozzle is handled work-hardens and cracks at the fitting, which is both the most likely place for a leak and the most expensive part of the assembly to replace. A swivel is a fraction of the cost of a hose.
They also reduce operator fatigue on high-flow assemblies, where the hose is heavy and stiff. Swivels sit alongside the nozzles in the range.
Troubleshooting
Why a nozzle clicks off early
In order of likelihood
- The receiving tank cannot breathe. A restricted or blocked vent means displaced air cannot escape, fuel backs up the filler neck and covers the sensing port. Check the vent before anything else.
- The spout is too far into the filler neck, sealing it and preventing air escaping past it, or sitting where splash-back reaches the port.
- Flow rate is too high for the receiving tank's vent — the same problem as the first but caused by the pump rather than the tank.
- The sensing port is dirty or partly blocked. It is a small hole in a dirty environment.
- The hose or reel is restricted — a kink, a tight reel, a failing swivel — producing turbulence and surging that trips the mechanism.
- The spout is bent or damaged, changing where the port sits and how fuel flows past it.
- The nozzle is worn out. Last on the list, and much less common than the six above.

Why a nozzle will not shut off
Rarer, and more serious, because the failure mode is a spill. Usually the sensing port or its tube is blocked so the vacuum never builds, the diaphragm has perished, the latch mechanism is worn or gummed with varnish from old fuel, or the nozzle has been dropped and the spout or internals distorted.
Take it out of service immediately
A nozzle that fails to shut off is not a "finish the shift" fault. The whole reason for fitting an automatic nozzle is that it stops without being watched, and one that does not is worse than a manual nozzle, because the operator has been trained to trust it. The same applies to the hold-open latch: used as intended, with the nozzle seated and the operator present, it is part of the design. Never wedge or tie a trigger open, and never defeat the latch on a nozzle whose shut-off is not working. If a nozzle needs a rag or a screwdriver to hold it open, it is telling you it is worn out.

Replace when the spout is damaged, when the shut-off is unreliable, when the trigger no longer returns cleanly, or when it weeps fuel. A nozzle is the cheapest item in the assembly and the one closest to the operator's hands.
If you are dispensing petrol rather than diesel, the specification changes across the whole assembly, not just the nozzle. Petrol is a flammable liquid and dispensing it creates an explosive atmosphere risk that diesel does not, which is why equipment for it carries explosion-protection certification — the same distinction covered in the flow meters guide.
